The Virtuelle Pädagogische Hochschule (VPH)
The Virtuelle Pädagogische Hochschule (VPH) is a service centre maintained by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and has been attached to the Pädagogischen Hochschule Burgenland since 2011. It offers continuous professional development to teachers and pre-service teachers in Austria. The courses – solely taught online – provide support in gaining digital competencies, i.e. being able to professionally implement technology assisted teaching into classrooms, and knowledge of current teaching and learning methods.
Digital competencies in focus
Guiding pupils in their use of digital and social media and fostering one’s own continuous professional development are key skills for digitally competent teachers of today. In order for teachers becoming (and staying) digitally competent, the VPH has set its goal to support pre-service students and teachers in their professional development in the best and most convenient way by offering all courses in the above mentioned areas solely online.
Practical | state-of-the-art | cooperative | individual
Currently the VPH is offering 3 sets of courses: cooperative online seminars, eLectures (webinars) and coffecup learning units. The academic year is divided into trimesters and teachers and students can attend the courses at the most convenient time.
Cooperative online seminars
Cooperative online seminars contain various self-study materials like tutorials and a number of tasks which mostly involve activity (so-called etivities) and discussion among the group of participants. A professionally trained online tutor provides assistance. After the successful completion of a seminar, which may last from two to four weeks, a certificate is issued to the participants.
An eLecture is a one-hour live online workshop, which is sometimes offered as a supplement to an online seminar (eWorkshop), sometimes offered as a session on its own or sometimes offered as part of a special subject focus. In an eLecture, an expert usually provides input before the participants are invited to ask questions to be answered by the expert. eLectures are a highly interactive endeavour due to the interaction between the expert and the participants. All eLectures are recorded and put into the archive of self-study materials to be accessed by teachers whenever convenient.
Coffeecup learning units
Coffeecup learning units aim at acquiring clearly defined digital competencies for implementation into teaching. The completion of a coffeecup unit takes about 15 minutes and consists of a video, a manual and a quiz. For each quiz successfully completed a virtual coffee bean is awarded. A certificate is issued after the receipt of 5 coffee beans.
The VPH team
The team’s competencies lie in (media) pedagogy, adult education, e-learning and didactics. The team is supported by a vast pool of online trainers who are mostly teachers and experts in didactics and digital competencies. They (co-)design online course materials and host online seminars or eLectures. Expert teachers thus design online courses for other teachers.
